2013-2014 ((Megan)
On Sunday, we flew to Sydney; right over the harbour where I got my first sight of the opera house and the Sydney harbour bridge. From the airport we took a taxi, and drove to our hotel. We dropped our bags off, and went for a look round. We went for a walk to Darling harbour. A girl had thrown some bread into the water, and some really big fish came up to the surface for the food. One of the fish was amazing; it had two wavy fins, and a solid fin on its head. The colours on its scales were beautiful. I looked over my shoulder and spotted a massive smack of jellyfish floating very close to the surface.
There are a variety of boats displayed in Darling Harbour including a replica of Captain Cooks boat Endeavour, a war ship, a submarine and a Viking long ship.
The following day we went to the botanical gardens to check out where to go on New Year's Eve. The view from the botanical gardens was amazing.
On New Year's Eve we got up early to go the fireworks display. We had to wait 17 hours for the fireworks; 6 hours of it being in a queue!! We brought loads of things to watch and do, so it flew by.
There were three separate displays and a parade of boats that were all lit up.
The first display was at 9, then another one at 10 before the main fireworks at midnight. There was a countdown from ten lit up in the centre of the bridge before they started. The main fireworks were amazing. They came off the opera house, the harbour bridge and off boats in the water. They were so colourful and pretty; did flips and cartwheels in the air- I loved them.
New year in Sydney was very different to England, but I loved it!!
Welcome 2014!!!
On New Years Day we went down to circular quay where all the ferries leave from. We got on a ferry down the Paramatta river, which went right under the Harbour bridge.
We didn't get off anywhere, just went for a ride. After that we walked round the quay, and got a great view of the opera house.
Then we looked round an area called 'the Rocks' which is an area under the bridge with lots of shops, restaurants and pubs. There were street comedians and buskers all around, and lots of unusual old houses.
As we were so close to the bridge, we decided to walk over it. Some people climb right over the arch, but we just walked across the part where cars cross (there was a footpath!). There was barbed wire on the sides to stop people from jumping. The view was amazing; it was just a shame that it wasn't sunny.
We did a lot of walking on New Year's Day, however the views were worth it.
